Quick! Somebody find Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro a boyfriend, because he’s getting bitchier and bitchier.
First, the mayor banned some gay-themed children’s books from schools, but then backed off on the idea under a storm of criticism from LGBT advocates — including Elton John.
Now, Luigi says there will be no Pride Parades in Venice under his watch, much to the embarrassment of citizens.
As the president of a rights group points out in an article on the Guardian’s site:
“Venice is not his city. At the moment he is governing it, but he won’t last long given the fool he is making of himself,” said Arcigay’s president, Flavio Romani. “He is becoming obsessive about this. Venice does not deserve it.”
One has to wonder about the mayor’s obsession. Because, you know what they say about people who doth protest too much.
Some believe that those who loudly oppose same-sex relationships are struggling with their own sexual orientation issues.
Of course, we have no way of knowing what motivates the mayor of Venice. But the gay community there might try reaching out to him.
Perhaps the mayor might, in the spirit of objectivity and trying everything once, have a tryst with a handsome Italian stud (sigh) in some secluded spot while the Pride Parade is going on, so it won’t actually happen under his watch because he’ll be preoccupied . . .
